METAL LIVES!!

by Darian Darqly

Last Thursday’s show was at the Outland Ballroom, a bar tucked away in the upstairs of an old downtown building that was probably once a bank or an ice cream parlor in its day. The kind of place that has more character by accident from what time has done to it than from its present day, ecclectic decor. The Ballroom isn’t known for crystal chandeliers or dualing baby grands, but it has one hell of a reputation because this house is known to rock!! Some of the best live shows I’ve seen were at the Ballroom and this show was no disappointment either!

First to take the stage was Six Shots Till Dawn from Clever, Missouri and did they ever “take the stage!” Front man, Jamie Holdren, jumped around like a man possessed. These guys are really animated live and as much fun to watch as they are to listen to, aided by the fact that they’re easy on the eyes, ladies.

Holdren’s bad-ass voice reminds me a little of Rob Zombie, at times, with a dash of Blackie Lawless; like a buzz saw to the face (in a good way)!! Their sound is remeniscent of Pantera or Metallica, when they were good. I’ve got my eye on these guys, Six Shots has potential for greatness and they’re quickly becoming one of my favorite local bands.

All Kills Aside (A.K.A.) was up next and delivered a balls to the wall performance! Rev’s intense vocals combined with their deep, moody, lyrics made for an almost metaphysical experience. These guys are wild on stage, but a careful listen to their lyrics makes one believe they’re a band with something to say and they say it LOUD mutha fuckas!! Definite musical talent, with passion, charisma and raw power make this band a force to be reckoned with. In spite of some technical difficulties, these guys rose to the occassion and rocked my face off!!

Assembly Line Gods were last, but not least to take the stage with their mesmerizing vocals and escoteric lyrics that plumbed the same depths as Tool or System of A Down. I found myself in deep contemplation, staring at the smouldering, red hot tip of my wine flavored cigarello while the singer chanted “sometimes I lie awake in bed at night wondering what if Lucifer was right.” (Check out their songs 78 and New Best Friend on their myspace page)!

Overall, this show kicked-ass, literally, (with an occassional mosh-pit breaking out) and isn’t that what metal’s all about?!!

Thanks to Ozarks Live Productions, Jimmy, Kevin and Piper (for getting us shit-faced)!

For those about to rock, we salute you!!

Peace!!
